BIPOC Youth Hair Clinics 2022
La’Keiah Batista Sánchez
May/June 2022
The next hair clinic will be in Rutland and Bennington on June 19, 2022 for the celebration of Juneteenth.
As the Health Chairperson of the health committee for the Rutland Area Branch of the NAACP, I am providing a new opportunity for our youth with the hair clinics. This is imperative to the mental health of the children in our community because they are our future. As young as 9 or 10 children start to notice their appearance and that they are different. Being BIPOC already makes them different but not being able to do what their friends are doing by simply going to get their hair done makes them question who they are and why they exist.
The organization started the hair clinics last year providing 4 clinics that serviced about 20 children throughout the year. I was asked at the end of 2021 to take over this program. After taking over this program, I was able to provide a successful hair clinic on February 26, 2022. We were able to provide 21 children in one day not only hair braiding services and a barber for hair cuts, but a sense of community so they know that they are not alone. This is a project that is dear to my heart and I would like to continue to see it grow.
The next hair clinic will be in Rutland and Bennington on June 19, 2022 for the celebration of Juneteenth! The clinic is run by donations and are welcomed to continue to provide these services for our youth.
